The gut-brain connection: Why it matters for IBS

IBS isn't just about digestion - it’s a complex interaction between the gut, brain, immune system, and microbiome. Here's how they work together:

  • Gut-brain axis: A two-way link between your gut and brain (where terms like butterflies in your tummy or gut feeling come from!). When disrupted, it can trigger IBS symptoms like pain, bloating, and irregular bowel movements. Ever noticed when you’re feeling anxious, you might be going to the toilet more regularly? This is your gut-brain axis at work.
  • Serotonin imbalance: 90% of serotonin is made in the gut. Low or erratic levels can affect motility, contributing to constipation (IBS-C) or diarrhoea (IBS-D).
  • Microbial imbalance (dysbiosis): An unhealthy gut microbiome can cause inflammation, gut permeability, and flare-ups.

Supporting your gut microbiome with targeted probiotics and simple lifestyle changes can help bring relief and improve your overall wellbeing.

Lifestyle and diet tips to enhance your results

Pair your probiotics with small daily habits to improve IBS symptoms:

  • Low FODMAP diet: Reduces daily intake of fermentable carbohydrates that can worsen bloating, however the low FODMAP diet is restrictive therefore only short-term use is recommended alongside a healthcare professional. If it isn’t possible to work with a healthcare professional, start with keeping a food and symptom diary to help identify foods that might be triggering your symptoms. It’s always important not to cut out whole food groups from your diet without supervision from a healthcare professional as this could lead to nutritional deficiencies. However, isolating and removing/reducing intake of individual foods, one at a time, can be an effective way to work out what works, and doesn’t work for you.
  • Exercise: Light movement like walking, yoga, or swimming can support a healthy gut microbiome and promote regular bowel movements.
  • Stress management: Breathing exercises, meditation, or therapy can calm the gut-brain axis.

In fact, research shows that lifestyle interventions that help to target the gut-brain axis like yoga can be equally as effective as following a low-FODMAP diet at reducing gastrointestinal symptoms! Find out More

Questions people ask

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but high-strength, multi-strain formulas can be beneficial. Based on what works best with our customers, we recommend starting with Probio7 Advanced, or if you need something stronger, Probio7 Ultra.

Many people notice improvements within a few weeks, but we recommend taking for at least 3 months. Probiotics are safe to take for long term, ongoing support. Remember - consistency is key! Our supplements are designed to be taken daily.

Sometimes, yes, temporary changes in digestion can happen as your microbiome adjusts. This usually settles within a few days. Try and not change too much at one time as this can aggravate your gut and you won’t know what is and isn’t effective. If you’ve never taken probiotics before, start with Probio7 Advanced. If you do notice some mild digestive discomfort, take 1 capsule every other day until your gut adjusts.
